Sciatica is pain along the path of the sciatic nerve, running from the lower back through the buttock and down the back of the leg.
Common causes
Most cases stem from a herniated disc compressing a nerve root. Other causes include spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis or spinal degeneration.
When to see a doctor
Seek medical care if the pain lasts more than a week, if there is leg numbness or weakness, or urinary disturbance — these may indicate serious nerve compression.
